Lucas Bastos presenting his poster at the EMBO Practical Course

As part of BEATS goal of empowering the scientific capabilities of its members, Lucas Bastos attended the EMBO Practical Course on "Population Genomics: Background and Tools", which took place in Torre del Greco, on the beautiful Bay of Naples, from 15–22 June.

In this week-long course, Lucas dove into the latest methods for reconstructing population demographic history and detecting natural selection, combining classic approaches with newer machine-learning techniques. Given how much sequencing data has transformed our field in recent years, acquiring these skills now is highly timely to strengthen the analyses planned for BEATS.

Beyond the lectures and hands-on practical sessions, Lucas had the opportunity to connect with other early-career researchers as well as senior scientists working across evolutionary genomics, and to present a poster on his own research.
